About the award

Józef Oleksy was an outstanding figure in Polish politics. He was one of the left-wing activists who introduced Poland and the Polish left into the democratic system. Thanks to his patriotism and attachment to the idea of the rule of law and civil society, he helped to gain social acceptance for the left.

Józef Oleksy also made an important contribution to building the international position of the Republic of Poland in Europe and in the world as a democratic and modern state. In Polish public life, he has become a symbol of dialogue, openness and tolerance for others. The award in his name is a tribute to the memory and life path of Józef Oleksy. It is also a point of reference for people who, like Józef Oleksy, perceive the world and politics.

The award is granted periodically, starting from 2016. It is addressed to participants of public life who, with their attitude and activities, testify that they are close to the ideals that guided Józef Oleksy. The initiators of the award are the family and friends of Józef Oleksy from the time of his political activity and scientific work at the Warsaw School of Economics (former SGPiS).
